The Watchmen REVIEW...... for those that have and have not read the book...

GOOD movie. As of right now I'd say it was even better than The Wrestler. (Which I think was a DAMN good movie.)
In case you didn't know the characters were created specifically for the story and there is no timeline or background you need to be aware in order to enjoy the film to it's fullest. It is a totally self contained work.
It's not a "comic" or "superhero" movie as well if that's what you are expecting it to be. Certainly it contains those ideas but only as part of the framework for the story. To attempt to classify it as such or relegate it to that status is a disservice to the film and story.
The opening credits have gotten pretty much universal praise from all over in the media and from the critics.
Highly recommended.
(If the preview doesn't exactly turn you on I don't blame you.... it's kind of blah compared to the actual film. Here it is anyways.)
Review for those who have read the book-- (or for after you've seen the film)
Too much sex, violence, Nixon and needless exposition.
Ozymandias is supposed to only be human (as are they all minus Dr. Manhattan of course) and the world's smartest man... instead he's throwing and kicking people around like The Hulk. It takes away from the gravitas of what he is physically able to do later in the film.
The use of actual well known pop music was good at first and drew me into the story and it being "real"... but later became somewhat distracting. (This is purely my personal opinion and how I felt at that time however.)
The pacing and reveals were off compared to the book I felt as well. It didn't seem to be able to milk most of the same realizations or "ah-ha" moments to their full potential.
This is due somewhat to the film's insistence of including action scenes that negate and temper those actions and reveals later in the film. Mainly the one where a plainclothes Nite-Owl and Silk Spectre II get jumped by a gang. The level of violence they deploy in that scene, specifically Ms. Jupiter, pretty much makes irrelevant Rorschach's transformation later in the film as well as her personal decision as to the level of violence she resorts to in the end (which the results of, as I touched upon earlier in the review, are further taken away from by Ozymandias' Superman-like abilities.
The sex scene ended needlessly cheesy and was long. This coming from a guy who thinks the addition of bare tits to a movie is always a plus.
Yes they changed the ending. No it's not totally a disaster. I actually like and preferred a couple little twists they took with it different from the book, but in the end it suffered by trying too hard to actually make it different.
Still it's about as good as actually making a movie about The Watchmen is going to get. Recommended.
